United Bank for Africa (UBA) Cameroon, in collaboration with Acha Eye Hospital, is taking a proactive approach to eye care and health awareness through a series of free eye screening campaigns. On January 24, 2025, the first of these campaigns was held in Douala, as part of UBA Cameroon’s broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.

Recognizing the critical role that eye care plays in overall health, UBA emphasizes the importance of early detection and prevention of common eye diseases. “Many eye conditions are asymptomatic in their early stages, making regular screenings essential,” says UBA. “Through early detection, we can identify diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration before they advance.”

In addition to eye conditions, regular screenings can also reveal underlying health issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure, which can affect vision. Early diagnosis of these conditions helps prevent permanent vision loss and enables timely treatment. UBA also highlights the benefits of corrective eye care, offering glasses or contact lenses and updating prescriptions to improve vision and quality of life.

The ongoing campaign aims to offer eye consultations to staff, customers, and members of the public, helping individuals assess their eye health and receive the appropriate advice or treatment. For 2025, UBA Cameroon the Acha  Eye Outreach team’s goal is to reach over 1,500 consultations across key cities, including Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam, Bamenda, and Limbe. This year’s campaign demonstrates UBA’s continued commitment to improving public health, raising awareness about the importance of eye care, and promoting early intervention for better vision health.
