President Donald Trump has nominated Christian Ehrhardt as the next United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cameroon, pending Senate confirmation. The career diplomat, who previously served in the central African country, is among 17 nominees the U.S. leader submitted to the Senate for approval on September 28.

If confirmed, Ehrhardt will replace Christopher John Lamora, who ended his tenure as U.S. ambassador to Cameroon in January 2026. John G. Robinson has headed the U.S. diplomatic mission in Cameroon as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. since Lamora’s departure.

Currently a Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM)—the department’s humanitarian bureau responsible for protecting and assisting persecuted people, refugees, and victims of conflict worldwide—Ehrhardt is no stranger to Cameroon.

For much of his diplomatic career, Ehrhardt served in security-related positions at U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions in Africa, including Algeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Chad, and Libya.

He served as Regional Security Officer (RSO) at the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde for about two years, according to a U.S. diplomatic personnel listing. At the end of his mission in Cameroon in May 2018, he was conferred the rank of Knight of the Cameroon Order of Valor. A year later, he received the Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award from U.S. Special Operations Command Africa.

Promoted to the helm of PRM following its creation in May 2025, Ehrhardt, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University and a Master of Arts degree from the U.S. Naval War College, returned to Cameroon in November 2025 as head of a Washington delegation.

The U.S. Embassy in Yaounde reported on its Facebook page at the time that Ehrhardt met with Felix Mbayu, Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations. Ambassador Lamora accompanied the delegation.

“They discussed the strong bilateral cooperation between Cameroon and the United States in the areas of security, health, and humanitarian assistance,” the embassy said in a Facebook post.

Ehrhardt also participated in roundtable discussions with representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He later visited the Cité Verte District Hospital in the Yaoundé II municipality to assess the impact of U.S. funding on healthcare delivery, according to another embassy post.

However, news reports indicated that the principal purpose of Ehrhardt’s November visit was to negotiate an agreement that would allow the United States to deport people with no ties to Cameroon to the country.

International investigations by Forbidden Stories and The New York Times reported that the White House envoy’s mission resulted in an agreement between Washington and Yaoundé. On December 16, 2025, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) concerning the transfer of deportees.

Nearly 50 days after the November 28, 2025 meeting between Ehrhardt’s delegation and Minister Mbayu, the first flight carrying non-Cameroonian deportees landed in Yaounde.

Cameroon is among 35 countries that have agreed to receive so-called “third-country nationals” (TCNs)—people deported from the United States to countries other than their countries of origin.
