On October 19, 2024, the Welisane Foundation took a significant step in raising breast cancer awareness in Cameroon by organizing a “Pink Walk” in Yaoundé. The event, which saw over 200 participants, began at Parcours Vita and culminated at the Mont Febe summit. This walk was not just a physical journey but a powerful statement of solidarity and support for those affected by breast cancer.
This initiative incorporated activities aimed at educating and supporting the community. For the past 3 years the foundation has been at the forefront to aiding women all year round with breast cancer and demystify the myths associated with breast cancer. Participants had the opportunity to engage in sensitization sessions and free breast cancer screenings. These initiatives are crucial in a country where early detection can significantly improve outcomes.
One of the key focuses of the day was addressing common myths about breast cancer. A prevalent misconception in Cameroon is that a breast cancer diagnosis is a death sentence. Welisane Mokwe, the founder of the Welisane Foundation, emphasized the importance of information in demystifying these myths. She highlighted that with early detection and proper treatment, many women can and do survive breast cancer.
This years breast cancer awareness month dubbed Pink October is theme, “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone”. It highlights the importance of community and support. Breast cancer not only affects the body but also takes a toll on mental health. Noemi Dalmonte, the UNFPA Deputy Representative, spoke about the critical aspect of mental health and the need to support women through their journey. The Welisane Foundation is committed to ensuring that women have the emotional and psychological support they need.
The Pink Walk in Yaoundé is a testament to the power of community action in the fight against breast cancer. It serves as a reminder that awareness, early detection, and support are critical in saving lives. The Welisane Foundation’s efforts are a beacon of hope, showing that together, we can make a difference.
Following the success of the Yaoundé event, the Welisane Foundation is organizing a similar activity in Douala on October 26, 2024. This upcoming event will continue the mission of raising awareness, providing free screenings, and offering support to those affected by breast cancer.
