Cameroon international Andre Onana has helped Trabzonspor reach the semi-final of the Turkish Super Cup by beating Samsunspor 3–1 on penalties on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
The 30-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, saved three crucial penalties after keeping a clean sheet in both regular and extra time, helping his team advance to the next round.
Onana also made five recoveries, completed 23 of 29 passes, delivered 10 of 16 accurate long balls, and earned a 10/10 rating on football statistics site Sofascore.
Onana’s Trabzonspor will face Genclerbirligi on May 12, after they eliminated league leaders Galatasaray by two goals to nil.
What this means for Andre Onana
Onana is clearly not playing where he wants to be and does not intend to remain there.
The former Inter Milan shot-stopper has made it clear that he wants to return to England and fight for his place at Old Trafford, despite reports that the Premier League side could place him on the transfer market this summer.
Performances like this are therefore not only beneficial for Trabzonspor but could also prove career-defining for Onana, whom some fans have labelled a scapegoat for Manchester United’s past struggles.
Similarly, in the age of football banter, a perfect rating for Onana challenges the narrative that has fuelled criticism against him. For some time, the goalkeeper has been nicknamed “Mr Both Teams Score” on social media, reflecting concerns among a section of fans about his clean sheet record. So far, he has kept six clean sheets for Trabzonspor.
Furthermore, this performance strengthens Onana’s case in discussions about a potential recall to the Cameroon national team, after missing out on two occasions since the appointment of David Pagou as head coach by the Cameroon Football Federation in December 2025.
This situation, which he once addressed satirically by suggesting his fellow goalkeepers were performing better than him during a recent live TikTok session with Ayuk Taku, may now take a different turn. Some fans are already calling on the coach to include the goalkeeper in the next squad.
Trabzonspor are currently third in the Turkish Super Lig table with 65 points, two behind Fenerbahce and six behind Galatasaray after 30 matches. As it stands, they occupy a Europa League spot, with four league games remaining.
