More than just a game, football is widely regarded as a powerful global language that brings people together across cultures and languages and fosters unity.
This was on full display on Sunday, September 13, 2026, as Wimbum sons and daughters in and around the nation’s capital thronged the 4,000-capacity Military Stadium in Ngoa-Ekelle, Yaounde, for the official closing ceremony and final of the 2026 edition of the Wimbum Cultural and Development Association (WICUDA) Yaounde football tournament.
Soccer talents from Mbumland had been on display in Yaounde for three months, from June 14 to September 13, 2026, in the 20th edition of the annual tournament, which was held under the theme: “Our Unity, Our Strength.”
The final between Nassara FC and newcomers Mbiplah FC drew a mammoth crowd to the stadium, underscoring the power of sports, and particularly football, in bringing people together.
They came from all three clans and the more than 30 villages that make up the Wimbum ethnic group, primarily found in Donga-Mantung Division of the North West Region. But on this day, they gathered around one shared identity and one common goal: the victory of Wimbum unity.
Played under the watchful eyes of WICUDA General President, Barrister Emmanuel Yembe, the thrilling encounter saw Nassara FC lift their maiden trophy after defeating Mbiplah FC 4-2.
By name and history, the two finalists come from different villages and clans in Mbumland. But on and off the pitch, their different lineages were overshadowed by a broader sense of Wimbum identity and unity.
“The Wimbum people have realized that football is an instrument that we use to build peace and unity within the Wimbum people and the country. We are gathered here to celebrate unity, love and peace,” Barrister Yembe said moments before the start of the encounter, while urging the finalists to uphold fair play.
It was a similar message echoed earlier by the WICUDA Yaounde Branch President, Ta Ngwang Tatangwa Willsman Ngaffison, as he welcomed football lovers to the Military Stadium for the final.
“When we talk about football, we talk about peace and unity. So, football as a unifying force has enabled the Wimbum people to gather here to preach peace and unity,” Willsman said.
The Guest of Honour at the 2026 WICUDA Yaounde Football Tournament was His Royal Highness, the Fon of Nkambe, Fon Nfor Amidou Nji, who is also President of the North West House of Chiefs.
A former player in the tournament, the young traditional ruler also used the occasion to add his voice to calls for unity among the Wimbum people.
“I am happy to be here now as the Fon of Nkambe, after previously being here as a player. Football unites people, so let’s use the spirit of football to unite ourselves as Wimbum people,” Fon Amidou Nji, who won the WICUDA Yaounde trophy with Bo MAG FC in 2021, said.
The peace and unity messages did not fall on deaf ears.
At the blast of the final whistle, it was difficult to determine who was the winner and who was the loser—perhaps except for the players on the pitch.
Although Nassara FC lifted the trophy, the bigger victory was visibly that of the entire Wimbum community in Yaounde.
Fans of both teams erupted in celebration while remaining respectful of one another. Both sides had reason to celebrate, with Mbiplah FC having earlier won the Championship title.
In a further demonstration that football was only one part of a much bigger community gathering, officials of both clubs could be seen after the match analysing the game and the tournament, with their discussions punctuated by laughter.
For the Wimbum community, the final was therefore about more than the 2026 WICUDA trophy. It was a celebration of a shared identity, culture, peace and the unity captured in the tournament’s theme: “Our Unity, Our Strength.”
