The University of Buea Choir Alumni Association (UBCAA) has marked a historic milestone by formally recognizing academic excellence among graduating members of the University of Buea Choir during the University of Buea graduation ceremony held in Molyko on December 12th, 2025.

The recognition, delivered through the UBCAA Academic Excellence Award Program, represents a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to reaffirm academic achievement as a core value of the choir’s identity while strengthening alumni-led support systems for current students.

Speaking during the ceremony, UBCAA Global Chairman, Mr. Jonas Ngeke Mofa, underscored the foundational role of education within the choir, stating that “through education, we came together as a choir, and over the years the UB Choir has instilled in us values of excellence, discipline, self-respect, and diligence. This initiative is a timely reminder that academic excellence has always been and will remain a fundamental pillar of our existence. Beyond recognition, the Academic Excellence Award Program is intended to motivate choristers to balance academics with choir commitments, strengthen alumni involvement, and support the personal and professional growth of its recipients.”

The certificates were formally presented by the Chairman, accompanied by the Financial Secretary, Mr. Lekianko Boris, in the presence of the Head Trainer of the University of Buea Choir, Mr. Nkweti Leonel, symbolizing continuity between alumni leadership and active choir mentorship.

Each awardee received a Certificate of Academic Excellence and a cash stipend of 100,000 FCFA, made possible through UBCAA’s ongoing fundraising efforts, as part of a broader commitment to easing post-graduation transitions and institutionalizing excellence.

Reacting to the recognition, Makoun Glory Flaubertha (GPA 3.53) described the award as both humbling and affirming, noting that “this recognition reflects the hard work, consistency, and sacrifice required to balance academics, personal life, and choir responsibilities. It proves that excellence is achievable with clear goals, discipline, and effective time management. I hope this inspires current choristers to remain committed academically while serving faithfully in the choir.”

This initiative forms part of UBCAA’s wider portfolio of projects focused on student empowerment, academic recognition, and sustainable alumni engagement, as the association continues its fundraising drive to expand impact and deepen support for future generations of UB Choir members.

About UBCAA

The University of Buea Choir Alumni Association (UBCAA) is a structured network of former members of the University of Buea Choir, which was originally established in 1993 during the tenure of the university’s first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dorothy Njeuma, to perform at the institution’s maiden matriculation ceremony.

As of late 2024 and 2025, UBCAA has undergone significant reorganization aimed at bridging generational gaps and stabilizing its legal and operational framework. The association is led by Global Chairman, Mr. Jonas Ngeke Mofa, and operates seven active autonomous branches globally in Fako, Douala, Bamenda, and Yaoundé, as well as in the USA, UK, and Canada. UBCAA currently has over 120 active members across these branches.

Guided by its motto, “Serve the Lord with joy” (Psalm 100:2a), UBCAA serves as a strategic platform for alumni reunion, mentoring of current choir members, professional networking, and community service through music. The association has established a clear roadmap for community empowerment and humanitarian initiatives, including the Academic Excellence Award Program, Tuition and Lodging Assistance, and Enhancing Campus Cleanliness projects.

UBCAA maintains an active online presence on Facebook under UBC Alumni Association, fostering connection and engagement among members worldwide.
