Cameroonian forward Christian Kofane could become one of the most feared strikers in England in the coming days when Bayer Leverkusen face Arsenal F.C. in the return leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League, following an impressive resurgence that has captured the attention of football fans in Cameroon and beyond.

The promising centre forward had endured a difficult spell after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, looking a pale shadow of the player he had been earlier in the season at Leverkusen.

In the weeks following the tournament, Kofane managed just one assist in 10 games for the Bundesliga side, while his playing time steadily declined.

In one match he was handed just a minute on the pitch, followed by a three-minute appearance in another. He was also left on the bench in a subsequent fixture, raising concerns that the young striker had fallen out of favour.

The dip in form was worrying for a player who only joined the club this season and whose market value has surged from £6.8 million in July 2025 to around £17 million in March 2026, according to football statistics platform FotMob.

However, the 19-year-old appears to have responded emphatically.

In his last four matches, Kofane has scored twice and provided two assists, regaining the trust of his manager and significantly increasing his playing time.

From featuring for just 18 minutes in earlier games, the striker has gone on to complete the full 90 minutes in recent outings.

His resurgence was most evident during Leverkusen’s clash with Arsenal on Wednesday in the Champions League Round of 16.

In what many had billed as a David-and-Goliath encounter, Leverkusen held the Premier League leaders to a surprising 1-1 draw in a match that nearly ended in victory for the German side.

Kofane stood out with an energetic performance against one of Europe’s most organised defences, led by Brazil international Gabriel Magalhães and France defender William Saliba.

The Cameroonian completed both of his dribble attempts and registered a shot on target against a defence that routinely frustrates experienced strikers.

He also completed 17 of his 18 passes, created three chances, won five of eight ground duels and one of three aerial duels, while drawing three fouls — the most of any player in the match.

The forward covered 10.5 kilometres during the game and reached a top speed of 33 km/h.

His performance stood in contrast to Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres, the former Sporting CP forward who scored more than 30 league goals last season in Portugal.

Substituted in the 74th minute, Gyökeres had a quiet outing, creating just one chance and completing 11 of 16 passes. He failed to register a shot on goal, attempted no dribbles, and lost four of the seven duels he contested.

Kofane received a match rating of 7.2 from FotMob — notably his lowest rating across his last three games despite his influential display.

If the young striker maintains this upward trajectory, Cameroon could soon boast another world-class centre forward capable of challenging the likes of Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen.

Before their decisive Champions League return leg against Arsenal on Tuesday, Kofane and Leverkusen face another major test when they take on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday.
