Limbe-based lawyer, Arrey Collins has been appointed director of the International Human Rights Council (IHRC) office in Cameroon – an organization focused on promoting and safeguarding human rights across the globe with United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Consultative Status. Barrister Arrey Collins will oversee a 21-member team.

In a statement on Saturday, November 29, the council said the appointment comes in recognition of Attorney Collins’ proven professional competence and distinguished record in the field of international justice, particularly his extensive experience with the International Criminal Court in The Hague and his demonstrated ability to manage sensitive human rights dossiers in accordance with applicable international legal standards.

The Council said it was confident that the new administration will rise to the responsibilities entrusted to it, contributing to strengthening the organization’s presence in Cameroon, enhancing monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and advancing human rights work in line with its mission to protect fundamental rights and uphold the rule of law.

Barrister Arrey Collins told NewsWatch that he had accepted and was happy with his nomination and also proposed the appointment of Barrister Luma Fred as Deputy/Assistant Director. He disclosed he has had working sessions with some in-house and external experts on how to foster the mandate and practical roadmap for the Cameroon office of IHRC.

The new director of the Cameroon office of the IHRC said one of his administration’s immediate priorities will be to complete the organization’s accreditation at the Ministry of External Relations in Yaounde.

The new boss of the IHRC in Cameroon said a delegation from the Council had a face-to-face working session with the Cameroon Ambassador to the Netherlands who assured them of her support through the Ministry in Cameroon and promised to maintain contact and collaboration with them in case of any difficulty as they pursue the accreditation process.
