Christian Ngah says he would rather publish the newspaper twice daily than venture into radio, television broadcasting.

The Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of leading English language daily newspaper, The Guardian Post, Christian Ngah, has ruled out venturing into radio and television broadcasting, saying his priority as the newspaper marks 25 years is to improve content, increase pagination and raise staff salaries.

Ngah made the declaration during a press conference in Yaounde on Friday, October 16 while announcing the newspaper’s Silver Jubilee celebration slated for November 14. The Publisher said after three decades of practising print journalism, he has no intention of switching to or venturing into the audiovisual media.

“I’ve been practising print journalism for 30 years. And I think I want to stay with what I do,” Ngah told journalists.

“If I had all the money in this world, I would never dabble into radio or TV broadcasting. I would rather publish The Guardian Post twice a day,” he declared.

Launched on August 30, 2001, with an initial budget of FCFA 150,000, according to Ngah’s account, The Guardian Post has grown from an irregular weekly into a newspaper that publishes seven times a week.

As the newspaper celebrates its quarter-century of existence, the publisher said his priority is to consolidate its achievements and improve its product.

“It’s very easy to get to the top, but to stay there is another problem,” Ngah said. “So I think just being where we are, if God can stand by us to stay where we are, it will be a big achievement for us. That’s the way forward.”

He said the newspaper intends to retain its position in the English-language print market while making improvements that will benefit readers.

“We want to do everything to remain the most widely read English newspaper in Cameroon and in CEMAC,” he said.

Bigger pages, richer content

One of the major plans is to increase the newspaper’s pagination from the current 12 pages to either 16 or 24 pages, while also expanding its content and introducing more columns to cater to different interests.

“As it stands, we are publishing 12 pages like any other tabloid in Cameroon,” Ngah said, adding that management has been examining ways to increase the number of pages and print the publication in colour.

“It’s true we have a very rich content, but we want to introduce more columns that will find everybody. Everybody will find himself or herself in The Guardian Post, whether culture, whether tradition, whether politics, whether religion,” he explained.

For the publisher, the proposed changes are intended to make the newspaper more inclusive and ensure that readers from different backgrounds and with varying interests find material relevant to them.

However, improving the publication will require investment, and Ngah identified staff remuneration as another key priority.

“Every morning when I look at the work they do here, seven on seven, I just have the feeling that they are not sufficiently remunerated, and the one thing that I want to do is to increase salaries,” he said.

He added that regular salary payments have remained a management commitment throughout the newspaper’s existence.

“For the past 25 years, we’ve been paying salaries on the 25th of every month,” he said, describing the proposed salary increase, improved content and additional pages as the major priorities for the newspaper’s next chapter.

“I think the big news and the way forward is increase the number of pages, improve on the content, and increase salaries,” Ngah stressed.

Decisive moment

Reflecting on the newspaper’s early years, Ngah recalled that support from advertisers helped it overcome the challenges of launching a publication that had yet to establish itself on the newsstands.

Having previously worked as managing editor of The Herald newspaper, he said he had built relationships that helped attract advertisers to the new publication.

The Guardian Post officially clocked 25 on August 30

“We had adverts of FCFA 1,750,000 in the first edition of The Guardian Post,” he recalled, saying the amount helped the publication get off the ground.

“People gave adverts to a newspaper they never saw in the kiosk,” he said, describing the period as a decisive moment in the publication’s history.

He also recalled a time when newspaper sales were stronger and the business relied on distribution and sales networks in towns including Bamenda, Buea, Kumba and Limbe.

Ngah announced that the weeklong Silver Jubilee programme, scheduled for November 9 to 14, will feature workshops and masterclasses for young print journalists, community outreach activities and a sports walk for media professionals. The celebrations will culminate in a grand gala at the Concord International Hotel in Yaounde on November 14.
