Cameroon and Brighton midfielder, Carlos Baleba, is keen on joining Manchester United this summer, according to reports by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
A potential move would see Baleba reunite with fellow Cameroonians, Bryan Mbeumo and Andre Onana, the latter currently on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkiye.
Baleba was already a key target for the Red Devils during last summer’s transfer window, but Brighton held firm, effectively stalling negotiations. With Manchester United now expected to reinforce their midfield with at least two signings, interest in the young Cameroonian appears to have been revived.
Where does Baleba stand?
Baleba is among six midfielders reportedly being considered by Manchester United as they prepare for a squad overhaul ahead of next season.
Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest is said to be the club’s top priority, with Baleba closely following. However, despite Anderson’s position on the shortlist, Baleba is viewed by some observers as a stronger long-term option due to his age, lower market valuation, physical presence, and ball-winning ability.
Valued at around £50 million—roughly half the reported price of Anderson—Baleba represents a more cost-effective option for United, while still offering significant potential.
Other midfielders linked with a move to Old Trafford include Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Joao Gomez of Wolverhampton, Alex Scott of Bournemouth, and Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United.
However, several of these potential deals are considered unlikely. For instance, Real Madrid are reportedly unwilling to part ways with Tchouameni, who has recently solidified his place within the squad.
Encouragingly for Baleba, some reports suggest that personal terms with Manchester United may already be in place, potentially giving him an edge over other candidates.
Key obstacle for Baleba
The major hurdle remains Brighton’s valuation of the player. The club is expected to demand a significant fee for Baleba, despite what has been described as an inconsistent season.
The midfielder has experienced fluctuating form, moving from a regular starter to a frequent second-half substitute. Some fans have attributed this dip to his reported desire to leave the club, while others speculate that Brighton may already be preparing for life without him by gradually reducing his role.
Nevertheless, Baleba recently delivered a standout performance against Chelsea FC, returning to the starting lineup and helping Brighton secure an emphatic 3-0 victory. The display has reignited optimism among supporters and could strengthen his case for a high-profile move.
Should he maintain this level of performance in the closing stages of the season, a transfer to Old Trafford appears increasingly plausible. Such a move would potentially see him link up with compatriots Onana—who is expected to return and fight for his place at Manchester United—and Mbeumo, in what could become a notable Cameroonian presence at the club.
