Cameroon international Andre Onana has once again pulled attention to his goalkeeping. Currently on loan at Turkiye Super Lig side Trabzonspor from Premier League outfit Manchester United, the 29 year-old has been labelled on social media “Mr Both Teams Score”.
Fans claim that the former Inter Milan shot stopper concedes in nearly every game despite making remarkable saves.
So, we went deeper to understand what the stats say in the Super Lig. By comparing data from goalkeepers of the top five teams of the league, here is what we got.
Andre Onana has played 15 games for Trabzonspor and kept just three clean sheets, putting his club on the third position with 41 points, that’s one behind Fenerbahce and two behind leaders Galatasaray, with a game each to spare.
Meanwhile fellow Premier League former goalie Ederson Moraes who plays for second-placed side Fenerbahce has kept five clean sheets in just 12 games. That’s one less than Galatasaray’s Ugurcan Cakir’s six clean sheets in 15 games.
Comparing Onana to the top two might seem unfair because they probably play for the two best clubs of the league.
However, the two other goalies behind him have done even much better so far.
Goztepe who sit 4th on the table brag of 11 clean sheets so far thanks to their reliable man between the sticks Mateusz Lis. He has played 18 games.
One step down the ladder is Ersin Detanoglu who has managed four clean sheets in just 10 games for Besiktas.
And that’s not all. Let’s go further. Among the top four goalies cited above the Cameroonian has faced the most shots so far (72) and conceded the most goals as well (21), with a save percentage of 69 from 48 total saves.
Mateusz Lis comes next with 64 shots faced and ten goals conceded. That’s a save percentage of 84.1 from 53 saves.
Fenerbahce’s Ederson Moraes has faced the fewest shots(36) and conceded 21 goals with just 25 saves. His save percentage is 69.4.
Ugurcan Cakir has faced 50 shots, conceded ten goals, and made 40 saves. A save percentage of 80.
