Two African mixed martial artists stole the spotlight over the weekend, securing impressive victories against experienced American opponents at the Professional Fighters League (PFL) event in Washington, D.C., underlining the growing impact of PFL Africa in producing elite MMA talent.

DR Congo’s Eliezer Kubanza and South Africa’s Nkosi Ndebele, both products of the PFL Africa competition, emerged victorious on Saturday, July 25, in what was a breakthrough night for African fighters on the global stage.

Kubanza delivered one of the evening’s most dominant performances, submitting American Chris “Cossack” Mixan with a D’arce choke midway through the second round in the opening bout of the main card.

The Congolese fighter dictated the contest from the opening bell, repeatedly hurting Mixan with powerful strikes before capitalising on his advantage with a clinical submission finish.

“I just showed the world that I am a great mixed martial artist, and that I can do it anywhere. I am the King Kong [his cage name] for a reason; when I show up, I show off”, Kubanza said at a post-fight press conference.

Earlier, reigning PFL Africa bantamweight champion Ndebele earned a unanimous decision victory over American Brandon Davis in a catchweight contest after his scheduled opponent, Mando Gutierrez, withdrew because of health concerns.

Ndebele showcased composure and technical superiority throughout the fight, comfortably outpointing the experienced Davis to continue his rapid rise within the PFL ranks.

“PFL Africa is an amazing idea, a beautiful show…I had to prove African talent can compete globally as well, and that PFL Global is where I belong”, Ndebele told the media after his victory.

The victories marked another milestone for PFL Africa, launched in 2025 to identify, develop and provide international opportunities for African mixed martial artists as part of the league’s vision of creating the “Champions League of MMA.”

Saturday’s results suggest that strategy is already paying dividends, with African fighters proving they can compete—and win—against established international opposition.

In the night’s main event, Thad “The Silverback” Jean claimed the PFL Welterweight Championship with a dramatic third-round technical knockout victory over Ernesto “Starboy” Rodriguez.

Jean survived an early scare after being knocked to the canvas before rallying to overwhelm Rodriguez with heavy strikes in the third round, forcing the referee to stop the contest and crown him champion.

For PFL Africa, however, the biggest takeaway from the CareFirst Arena in Washington was the success of Kubanza and Ndebele. Their victories not only validated the league’s commitment to creating pathways for African fighters but also reinforced the continent’s emergence as one of mixed martial arts’ fastest-growing sources of world-class talent.
